Director's Welcome

Michelle Horn

The Division of General Internal Medicine is part of the Department of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, an academic medical center and teaching hospital charged with training the next generation of physicians. Our division provides care for patients both in the hospital and ambulatory settings such as UMMC Pavilion, LB Building, and Grants Ferry locations; education to medical students and residents including services within the University Hospital on three of our inpatient teaching services; and scholarship related to medical education, hypertension, and sleep apnea, just to name a few.

I am very proud of the members of our division and their commitment to all areas of the University’s mission: service, education, and scholarship.  Below are just a few highlights of our division:

  • Our faculty have won many teaching awards at both the undergraduate and graduate medical education levels.
  • Several members of our division hold leadership positions at both the departmental and institutional levels.
  • Our nurse practitioners are actively involved in the education of nurse practitioner students as well as our doctors of pharmacy being prime preceptors for pharmacy students.
  • Our division has a strong commitment to educating others in primary care and thus we oversee the Continuity Clinics for both our Internal Medicine and Medicine/Pediatrics residency programs.
  • We offer specialized care for patients with hypertension with 4 of our providers being Board-Certified in Hypertension and several having participated in numerous studies related to hypertension, including the SPRINT Trial.
  • One of our providers who is Board-Certified in Sleep Medicine can perform an evaluation for sleep-related disorders and also has numerous publications in this area.
  • Two of our faculty members host radio shows on Mississippi Public Broadcasting, Southern Remedy and Kids and Teens.
  • We have a heart for service to the community and participate as preceptors at the Jackson Free Clinic.
  • Two of our faculty are board-certified in obesity medicine and have a robust non-surgical weight management clinic.
  • Members of our division participate in committees at the institutional, regional, and national levels related to the clinical arena as well as education.

As we move forward in the coming years, I know that our commitment will remain true as at our heart our division is filled with servant leaders who are well-prepared to lead the next generation of physicians. As educators and primary care physicians, our division is here to serve the people of Mississippi both now and in the future!
